Felt Stories

Using materials that were once alive, and the ancient process of felting, Geraghty's practice explores parallels between haptic properties of felt and the ways meaning is made and shared. Through slow repeated entanglement, soft fluff becomes a dense structural form. Wool can soften, absorb, insulate, muffle and retain warmth; stories, too, can absorb experience, offer protection or soften truths. Narratives and meanings can shift, shrink, and distort as they pass between people across time.

Geraghty's forms are tactile and strangely animate. They operate as acoustic bodies - their softness absorbs sound and filters the surrounding air - giving a physical form to the accumulated histories, private narratives and unspoken tensions that make up the atmospheric energy of a place.
